Government looks to slash red tape to improve home EV charging

This week (29 October), the Department for Transport (DfT) announced proposed planning reforms to make it easier and cheaper for renters and households without driveways to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers.

The changes aim to reduce red tape and application fees – potentially saving residents up to £250 – by consulting on removing planning permission for discreet pavement charging gullies. The reforms also propose mandating charge points in new covered car parks. The proposed reforms follow the government’s continued commitment to supporting EV infrastructure, including the £25 million scheme announced in July to help councils deliver cross-pavement charging solutions.

The government will launch a consultation in due course to invite input from stakeholders.
