Mid Devon leading the charge

Mid Devon District Council has welcomed a new rapid charger as part of county-wide scheme.

A new charger has been installed at William Street car park in Tiverton, with Crediton and Cullompton next in line to receive one.

The Council teamed up with Devon County Council and neighbouring districts as the DELETTI partnership, to attract competitive bids from electric vehicle (EV) operators.

A contract was won by Wenea (Wenea Devon II Limited) to install and manage rapid chargers in car parks across the county, in return for a lease to raise revenue for both Wenea and the councils. The charger in Tiverton was the first to be installed through this Devon-wide partnership.

The Council now hosts 18 public charge points at its car parks and leisure centres.

Councillor Natasha Bradshaw, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said:

“I’m delighted to see this first Wenea rapid charger and the accessible layout here in central Tiverton.
“We hope Mid Devon’s growing network of charging bays boosts driver confidence that you’re never far from a recharge. We will install extra rapids in the next 12 months, followed by more public EV charging points in rural locations.”

Jason Ball, Climate and Sustainability Specialist, said:

"As a local authority, we are helping the transition to cleaner travel. Rapid charger availability in Mid Devon is around 23 per 100,000 people – far higher than the South West average – which benefits the local economy and attractiveness to visitors. Ownership of plug-in cars is high in Mid Devon too!”

Mid Devon is also part of the next Government funded round of public charger installations, which will focus on more widespread, slow chargers serving neighbourhoods and rural settings alongside the faster charge hubs across Devon.
