Net-Zero Social Housing Recognised at National Level Again

Mid Devon Housing’s most recent celebration came at the British Construction Industry Awards, where it picked up the ‘Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year’ for its development at St Andrews, Cullompton.

The housing development, built in partnership with ZED PODS, welcomed new tenants in March 2024 and consists of three two-bedroom and three one-bedroom apartments.

The judges commented on the “impressive low carbon project that delivers across all pillars of sustainability”, highlighting the adoption of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to build in half the time of a conventional build, building social housing to the highest standard on a brownfield site, and tackling fuel poverty by providing a highly insulated building powered by solar and heat pumps.

Councillor Natasha Bradshaw, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said:

“We’re proud to lead the way in creating housing that provides homes for local residents in a way that supports our carbon neutral objectives. We’re delivering housing that’s affordable, net-zero and energy-efficient, helping to reduce household costs and environmental impact.”

Councillor Simon Clist, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Assets & Property, said:

“Winning this award is a testament to the hard work and vision of everyone involved. This project is a milestone for Mid Devon Housing; the first in a series high-quality, affordable housing developments built alongside ZED PODS, providing modern homes for local people.”

Tom Northway, Chairman of Zed Pods, said:

“We are delighted that St Andrews House continues to receive recognition, reinforcing Zed Pods' commitment to sustainable, resilient housing solutions on brownfield sites. Together with Mid Devon, we are creating affordable, zero-operational-carbon homes for the local community”

Shapland House, Tiverton also recently won ‘Best Public Sector Brownfield Project’ at the Environment Analyst Brownfield Awards. In 2024, Mid Devon District Council and its two projects at Shapland Place, Tiverton and St Andrews, Cullompton have been shortlisted in a combined total of 15 categories from 9 different awards organisers.

Mid Devon Housing is committed to not only building more social housing for local people, but doing it in a high quality, low environmental impact way that meets the needs of tenants. This futureproofs the Council in terms of its net-zero carbon goals and reduces life-time maintenance costs for its properties.
